Welcome to Wildridings Primary School!
Physical Education (PE)
At Wildridings Primary School, Physical Education (PE) plays a central role in fostering physical, social, and emotional development across all year groups. We believe that high-quality PE encourages children to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, helping them to gain essential skills and confidence that extend far beyond the school environment.
Our PE curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum for Physical Education, ensuring children progress from mastering fundamental movements (such as running, jumping, and throwing) in Early Years, to developing more complex skills such as accuracy, control, and co-ordination in Key Stage 2. As children move through the school, they are increasingly challenged to apply these skills in team-based and individual sports, fostering an appreciation for teamwork, strategy, and personal effort.
Promoting Teamwork and Life Skills
At Wildridings, we place a strong emphasis on teamwork as an essential life skill. Our PE lessons encourage children to work collaboratively, applying tactical knowledge and communicating effectively with peers. These experiences help children not only in sports but also in developing confidence, leadership, and resilience both in and outside the classroom.
Sports Leadership and Initiatives
This year, we introduced our Wildridings Sports Captains, a student leadership initiative designed to encourage responsibility and initiative. Year 5 pupils were invited to apply for the role, learning about leadership and performing speeches to their peers. The introduction of Sports Captains has led to significant improvements in lunchtime games, the creation of new after-school clubs, and the potential for new outdoor equipment through collaboration with all year groups.
Increased Sporting Opportunities and Competitions
We are committed to providing a range of competitive sports opportunities for our pupils. Throughout the academic year, we participate in a variety of sporting events for Years 3-6, ensuring that our students have access to high-quality competitions and the chance to represent the school. Recent events include:
- Year 5/6 Netball Tournament
- Year 3/4 Football Tournament
- Years 4/5/6 Cross Country Event
- Year 5/6 Football Fixtures
- Year 3/4 Tag Rugby Festival
- Year 5/6 Tag Rugby
These events, known as our ‘Autumn Sports’, are designed to raise participation levels and prepare children for competitive sports. To ensure the best possible preparation, pupils participate in after-school clubs and lunchtime games. Our Netball After-School Club, with over 20 members, and Cross Country/Athletics Club, with over 40 members, are examples of how we support children’s athletic development outside of PE lessons.
