Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At Wildridings Primary School, we believe that learning a foreign language opens doors to new opportunities and helps children appreciate the diversity of the world around them. In line with the National Curriculum for Languages, we aim to develop our pupils' understanding of language, culture, and communication, preparing them for an interconnected global society.

We focus on French as our main language, encouraging children to develop a love for learning languages and the confidence to use them. Through a blend of interactive activities, games, and computer-based learning tools, we introduce new vocabulary, grammar structures, and pronunciation in a fun, engaging way. Our lessons aim to ignite curiosity and inspire a passion for language learning, which is essential for the development of communication skills.

In line with the UK Primary Curriculum objectives, our MFL curriculum focuses on:

  • Listening and Speaking: Encouraging children to understand and respond to simple spoken language, improving their listening comprehension and oral communication skills.
  • Reading and Writing: Building children’s ability to read and understand simple texts, and to write using familiar vocabulary and basic grammar structures.
  • Grammar and Vocabulary: Introducing key grammatical concepts (e.g. nouns, verbs, adjectives) and expanding vocabulary, to help children build sentences and express themselves effectively in French.
  • Cultural Awareness: Exploring French stories, songs, and cultural traditions to help children gain a deeper understanding of the language and the countries where it is spoken.

Our lessons are designed to be active and interactive, drawing on cultural aspects such as French stories, songs, festivals, and traditions to enrich children’s understanding of the language in context. We aim to foster a well-rounded appreciation of both language and culture, so that children not only learn to communicate but also develop a broader worldview.

By the end of their time at Wildridings, children will have a solid foundation in French, with the skills to communicate confidently and the curiosity to continue their language learning journey.
