Art

At Wildridings Primary School, we believe that Art is more than just creativity, it is a powerful way for children to express themselves, connect with history, and explore the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to nurture a deep love of art while developing confidence and skill in a wide range of artistic techniques. We provide access to quality resources that allow them to experiment across disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media.

We explore art history and the work of influential artists to better understand how creative expression has evolved and how it continues to shape the modern world. Through these studies, there is an expectation to reflect on their own work and the work of others, using the language of art to analyse and evaluate with thoughtfulness and pride.

Our Art sessions explore a wide range of topics and themes bursting with colour, creativity, and character! From playful leaf rubbings and Yayoi Kusama-inspired pumpkin spots in EYFS, to Van Gogh’s expressive brushstrokes and Jackson Pollock’s energetic splatters in Year 1, children explore iconic artists while experimenting with media and technique. A fun, exciting and engaging journey through Key Stage 1 and 2, with opportunities to sketch shells and minibeasts, sculpt clay boggarts and canopic jars, and paint dreamlike jungles à la Henri Rousseau. Year 6 wraps it all up with powerful Blitz silhouettes, vibrant ‘Day of the Dead’ masks, and immersive dioramas that celebrate both history and imagination. Whether it’s marbling, mosaics, or modelling junk into masterpieces, our continuous provision up to year 3 and the project work in upper years ensures every child has the tools to explore, create, and shine.

We foster an environment where every child feels empowered to express themselves, inspired not only by celebrated artists but by their peers too. Communication of ideas and emotions in personal and imaginative ways is highly encouraged.

Overall, our Art curriculum provides a strong foundation for continued artistic development, preparing our children confidently for further study in Art at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
