Music

At Wildridings Primary School we strive for all of our pupils to develop a life-long love of music. We are a school with a musical atmosphere and a love of singing. We engage and inspire our children through a wide range of quality musical experiences and enrichment opportunities. At the heart of the music curriculum are; creativity, curiosity, excitement and children who are developing increased self-confidence, self-esteem and collaborative skills.

Children will perform, listen and analyse music critically, sing, improvise and compose music. They will understand the interrelated dimensions of music and understand these as building blocks within music. Music opportunities will support children’s mental health and allow them time to express their emotions.

At Wildridings we provide an inclusive, extensive, diverse and progressive music curriculum for all children. This is delivered through outstanding music teaching and leadership.

We teach Music through both our topic lessons and discrete sessions. From EYFS to Year 6, the children are exposed to a range of different genres of music and to significant composers and music makers on a local, national and global scale.

The children participate in ‘Sing Loud!’ This is an opportunity for the children to learn a song linked to a whole school theme. Each year group rehearses their song and performs this to the rest of the school.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, we perform a Nativity each year and in Key Stage 2, children in Year 6 have an opportunity to perform a ‘Musical’ to parents and the rest of the school.

Instrumental Teaching

Our Year 2 pupils learn to play the ocarina.

In Year 3 pupils have an opportunity to learn how to play the recorder over a number of weeks and perform in a concert to parents.

Year 4 pupils participate in a large singing event at the Hexagon Theatre in Reading.

Year 5 pupils have the opportunity to learn and play the violin over the Summer term. This is an IN2u project taught in conjunction with Berkshire Music Trust. The children finish the term with a Summer concert to parents.

In addition to our school curriculum, we also encourage outside visitors to share their musical knowledge, performances and passion for music. Our pupils have recently loved live performances by brass and string ensembles.

We offer a range of free music/performing arts clubs to our pupils during break and lunch times, including:

Strings Workshop

The strings workshop with Berkshire Music Trust was a big hit with our pupils. It was so lovely seeing the children respond really positively to holding and playing a new instrument. Their faces were a picture! A wonderful experience for all who took part.

Listen up Week

Our pupils were in awe of the musical talent and skills on show when they listened to a live performance by a string ensemble during assembly. The ensemble included violin, viola and cello players who played a range of classical and more modern tunes. Everyone listened intently and responded through singing and questions and answers. The performance was uplifting and awe inspiring. There was not a dry eye in the house! A wonderful, magical experience for us all.
