Geography

At Wildridings Primary School, we believe that Geography sparks curiosity and helps children explore the world around them. By examining the contrasts between our local area and other places, children develop a deeper understanding of their environment and the wider world. Through building geographical vocabulary and engaging with real-world experiences, we aim to foster a sense of global citizenship, encouraging children to think critically and believe in their ability to make a difference.

Geography is taught as part of our thematic curriculum, incorporating whole-class teaching, individual learning, oracy, and continuous/enhanced provision. Our sessions are designed to captivate children's imaginations, encouraging inquiry and offering a range of hands-on experiences. For example, Year 2 pupils visit Bournemouth beach to explore coastal features, while Year 3 children visit the Living Rainforest near Newbury to gain insight into rainforest ecosystems.

As children progress through the school, they develop essential mapping skills and deepen their knowledge of both physical and human geography, exploring how the world has changed over time. In Nursery and Reception, geographical learning is integrated into everyday experiences, where children discuss topics like seasons, environments, and maps, building a foundation of understanding about the world they live in.

Through Geography, we empower children to ask questions, make connections, and become thoughtful, informed citizens of the world.
