Maths

At Wildridings Primary School, we place mathematics at the heart of our curriculum, ensuring it is taught in a way that reflects the key principles of the National Curriculum. We follow the White Rose Maths small steps approach, which supports a structured, progressive journey through key mathematical concepts. Our aim is to provide a broad, balanced, and engaging maths experience that helps every child develop a love of learning and a solid foundation in the subject.

Our approach starts by building confidence and fluency with numbers, ensuring children are comfortable with basic concepts before progressing to more complex skills. As children move through the school, they develop the ability to reason mathematically, solve problems, and make informed decisions. By providing opportunities for practical activities, exploration, and collaborative discussions, we aim to ignite children’s natural curiosity about mathematics and encourage them to explore topics in greater depth.

In line with the UK Primary Curriculum objectives, our maths lessons cover a wide range of areas, including:

  • Number and Place Value
  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division
  • Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Statistics

We believe that mathematics should be relevant and connected to real-life experiences. Children regularly explore how mathematical concepts apply to everyday situations, helping them understand the practical value of what they are learning. In addition, we focus on developing perseverance, independence, and the ability to work collaboratively. This helps children not only to solve problems but also to articulate their reasoning using the correct mathematical vocabulary.

As part of our commitment to developing lifelong learners, children revisit key concepts as they move through the school. This ensures they have the opportunity to refine and deepen their understanding, building a secure foundation that will prepare them for future learning.

Our curriculum encourages children to take ownership of their learning and supports them in becoming confident, capable mathematicians. We are committed to ensuring that every child is equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
