Knowledge & Understanding
At Wildridings we teach geography through topics. These topics are designed to engage the children’s interests and give them new experiences, such as Year 2 going to Bournemouth beach at the start of their topic on Beachcombers or year 1 having dinosaurs visit the school! Each topic will also include other areas of the curriculum such as history, art, science and design, but one topic will have a main geography focus.
The main geography topics are: Year 1 ‘Bright light big city’, Year 2 it is ‘Land Ahoy’, Year 3 ‘Tremors’, Year 4 ‘Road Trip USA’, Year5 ‘Allotment’ and Year 6 ‘Frozen Kingdom’. The children, also during the other topics, increase their mapping skills, their knowledge of physical and human geography of the world and how the world has changed over time. Nursery and Reception teach geography through the children’s play and their experiences, although just like the rest of the school, they extend the children’s learning by introducing new experiences relating to the seasons, the environment and maps of the world.
